Analysis : Mind Hunter

 Mind Hunter

Today I will be analysing the opening sequence from the Netflix series Mind Hunter. I will be discussing Camera angles, Editing techniques and sound design.

From watching the trailer through numerous times I can see that there is many dead bodies a tape recorder and a microphone. These all have their hidden meanings such as multiple dead bodies can draw a link to a serial killer so we can guess that this is going to be about a serial killer. The Tape recorder can draw links to a confession or maybe an interrogation that is about to take place, when used in conjunction with the microphone that we see, we can infer that someone is going to be talking and being recorded possibly the killer themselves.

The camera angles in this trailer don't really change. There is a lot of close up shots of the items we can see, this could be to show as much detail in the shot and to reduce the amount of dead space in order to focus the viewers attention on the item in frame. The use of the close ups on the quick flashing images we can infer that these are not meant to be seen so makes the viewer think about what they are seeing as it can be clearly made out when watching the trailer for the first time. From these opening shots I believe that this is going to be a thriller, crime or mystery series as the trailers don't give much away therefore making it a mystery, and if your quick enough the flashing images are actually dead bodies which could make it a horror. The use of the moving shots in the edit is to engage the viewer as everything camera wise up to this point is rather stationary.

The editing in the sequence is rather special. There are transition are very fast and frequent which enhances the speed and the overall pace of the edit. The use of fades ins and outs in the edit is to make it flow a lot smoother which makes for a better viewing pleasure for the viewers. The use of the fast cuts to show the pictures of the bodies is rather effective as it doesn't give anything away and keeps the audience guessing on whats going on.

The sound design for this sequence is good and is made to not give too much of the story away. The use of minimal sound and keeping it simple is rather effective in keeping the viewer interested in the introduction sequence the use of a non diegetic sound track used in conjunction with the diegetic sound of the microphone popping keeps the viewer interested and guessing to what could be making those sounds.

Overall, the sequence is rather effective in the way it keeps the viewer engaged and interested whilst watching it. It keeps the viewer guessing to what is going on in the trailer as not much is given away therefore making it even more engaging to the reader.
