Culture in the Digital Age | Problem Solving
Chosen Idea
From the mind maps i have decided to pursue the topic of film making, This is because i fell that there is more to talk about with this idea and also it will be easier to create. Also i believe it will engage with more people than the other idea this is because films and tv series are a big part of peoples life even more so in the lives of 13 - 19 year olds. I chose this idea over the others because it is more interesting in my opinion this is because i believe with the rise of influencers on social media this age range of young people look up to these people. Therefore with this documentary it will show them that they can also make content like their favourite social media influencers.
Presentation
I have managed to put together a presentation which highlights my idea and intentions very clear, i have a timeline which is easy to understand with dates showing when that task needs completing by. It has images scattered throughout in order to give a visual representation of what i will be talking about or doing. My presentation includes all the key aspects that will make an appearance in my documentary. Every slide is clear and shows the audience what i plan to do under the specific sub topic. This is my presentation it starts at the bottom and goes to the top (bloggers fault).

Over time the film making industry has
changed drastically, from big heavy
cameras to ones we carry daily, These
changes have revolutionised the way films are made.

The history of cameras is a pretty
interesting one. The first camera
believed to be invented was by a guy
named Louis Le Prince in the year
1888. His first camera had 16 lenses
and took sequential photographs from a
single point of view. However, at this
time there was a rivalry between two
groups to create a camera that
functioned. This was between Louis le
prince and Thomas Edison. This caused
a lot of controversy when Louis went
missing in September 1890. His widow
Lizzie believed Edison had him killed
to get his rival out of the way. But
we will never know. This is how Edison
got all the publicity when he got his
camera to finally work as no one knew
of Louis' invention.
TITLE SCREEN "FILM MAKERS"
Once the dialogue has finished this title screen will come in
and fill the frame with a voice over saying "film makers"
before slowly fading out same as before.

Over the years there has been many
great filmmakers who have captured
the attention of millions all over the
planet. An iconic film maker from the
non digital age was Alfred Hitchcock.
This man was best known for his hits
such as Psycho (1960) and vertigo
(1958). These films were big hits for
their time as they were inventive and
had never really been done before.
However, the film psycho was labeled
as too explicit so to overcome this
Hitchcock had to improvise. He did
this by not having any violent scenes
as such but hid any violent actions.
If you watch this clip you can clearly
see the knife doesn't touch the woman
..."shows clip". You may also notice
the blood if this was real fake blood
then it would have been deemed to
explicit so he used Bosco Chocolate
Syrup instead but as the film is in
black and white you can tell the
difference.
A more modern director is that of
Steven Spielberg. You may know him
from hit films such as jaws, Saving
Private Ryan and the Indiana Jones
films. Steven Spielberg is one of the
main directors to use the digital age
to his advantage. In the hit films of
Jurassic park Spielberg used a
combination of full-scale models,
costumes and CGI in order to make the
dinosaurs as realistic as possible.
Without advancements in technology and
digital technology this would have
been impossible to do.

As the digital age has taken over we
have saw a huge change in the ways
films are recorded, edited and
produced. A major way in which film
editing has changed is with the
improvements in software. Back in the
day the tapes would have to be
physically cut and stuck together but
now with softwares such as premier pro
and final cut for example we can now
do all this digitally saving time and
money. Best of all these softwares are
available to pretty much everyone on
whatever budget. Free editing
softwares such as Windows movie maker
and Davincci resolve are great tools
to get people into editing. if you are
looking for more professional
softwares Adobe Premier pro, after
effects and final cut is where you
want to be looking.
Moving onto hardware we see that
stabilisers such as stedi cams and
gimbals have taken moving shots to
another level by making shots a lot
more stable removing the unwanted
camera shake in some circumstances.
Cameras have also came along way since
the start of the digital age. We see
small, compact portable cameras which
we carry on us every day in the way of
a phone which can be used to make
films. *shows clip*. We now have DSLR
and Mirrorless cameras which have
their uses in both photography and
film making to get crisp sharp shots.
Then we have big cinema cameras which
are used when shooting shots for
films. This shows that there are ways
of recording films for everyone no
matter how experienced or advanced you

are.
The use of drones have re vamped how
areal shots are conducted. Previously
if you needed a high up areal shot you
would have needed a helicopter which
is both expensive and complicated.
With the invention of drones areal
shots are now more accessible than
ever before. There are drones for both
beginners and advanced users so
everyone is able to get on bored with
the drones.
In the beginning films never used to
have sound as there way no way of
recording it with the actual footage.
However, now that we have microphones
and advanced sound editing softwares
such as adobe audition, logic pro and
audacity we see sound editing is now
available to all. There is free sound
editing softwares such as audacity but
there is then your paid ones such as
logic pro. Then again there something
for everyone.
Visual Effects play a huge part in
modern films. The use of green screens
and blue screens help film makers have
custom backgrounds and help make films
look more real or more fitting to the
story. More and more effects are now
computer generated which we more
commonly know as CGI - computer
generated image. They help directors
who don't want to make the effects
happen in camera achieve their desired
effect. A great example of this is War
for the Planet of the Apes when they
add in digital apes to help fill the
background.
TITLE SCREEN "THE FUTURE OF FILMS"

The future of films as we speak is
rather unknown some people speculate
that films will eventually turn into

Locations
I plan to shoot my documentary in the studio or at home depending on the circumstances this is because i can then have the backdrop how i feel and make it fit the overall topic of the documentary. I could also use the green screen if needed if i shot in the studio. This would help for if i needed a certain background that i could not accomplish without a green screen.

Meeting the Brief
My chosen idea meets the brief as in the brief it says to create a media product which relates the the theme of culture in the digital age which appeals to younger people from the age of 13-19. My idea will show them how the film making culture has changed with the help of the digital age, this is because people in this age range will probably follow many social media influencers who create their own films on their own. This documentary will show them how film making has evolved and how it is currently more accessible to majority of people . They will also learn how they can create their own films and videos with things they already have or could pick up without spending any money at all. This therefore links with the theme of culture as it appeals to people who are apart of a social media culture and or associate themselves with film culture.
